A friend from years ago asked me what I liked best about the Middle Fork. Folks who know me understand that I bubble over with enthusiasm about this special river, so settling upon a favorite is not easy.
However, I love challenges! Rather than narrowing my most prized places and activities down to just one, Melody and I came up with ‘Brad’s Top 10 Favorites!’ Here goes – and NOT listed in any particular order:
Brad’s Top 10 Middle Fork Favorites!
- Starry nights
- 100 miles of whitewater
- Families bonding
- Pistol Creek
- Stir Fry Dish
- Stateland Left campground
- Day 5 of our six day trips
- Our guests
- The Paper Bag Game
- Fly fishing
Starry nights is a natural….nighttime on the river is stunning and such a great change from our normal skies so lit up with city lights that we forget stars even appear!
Over 100 miles of crystal clear, free flowing water moving through incredible whitewater and amazing vistas, the fact of the entire Middle Fork of the Salmon River makes the list by virtue of existing!
Seeing families unwind and truly re-connect and bond with each other is such a treat for me to observe. I guess if someone required me to prioritize this list, Families Bonding might be the at the top. The Middle Fork helps people renew, refresh and re-invigorate themselves and each other.
Pistol Creek is so challenging at any water level and we reach it on day two at the end of the upper river section. People are beginning to really connect with the river on their second day. With over 300 rateable rapids on our trip, this one easily earns a spot on my Top 10 Favorites.
I’m a ‘foodie’ at heart, and I LOVE our new Stir Fry dinner dish! More veggies…yeah! In fact, this year, we’ve added more fresh fruit and more veggies across all river menus….fantastic.
Stateland – Left is a terrific campsite. It’s so spacious! The majestic Ponderosa Pines offer nice afternoon shade yet let the warm morning sun through for us all to enjoy.
Day 5! This is such a special river day! Huge water, Impassable Canyon, stunning scenery, big horn sheep – and sometimes bears – Waterfall Creek, Vail Falls…..Day 5 has it all.
Guests! I have such a great job – hosting people and sharing this very magical place with folks of all ages. Rafting the Middle Fork is fun by itself, but by adding the guest component makes me a very lucky business owner. And I have to add, Adventure Sun Valley guests are the BEST! !
The Paper Bag Game is such a hoot! People love this game, and so do I. The bag is set in a really sandy spot with the objective to grab the bag with your mouth while keeping only one foot on the ground. Everyone sitting around the campfire gets a chance, and then we make the bag a little shorter and go at it again. Lots of fun!
Fly Fishing – The Middle Fork easily earned its reputation as an world-famous fly fishing paradise. After the heat of the summer, the cool Fall days make fly fishing an absolute stellar sporting activity, though you can catch me anytime during the summer throwing a line in the water, ‘cuz I just love to fly fish!
